D11: Improve the Quality of Listings on Airbnb

Why guests can't tell a good Airbnb from a bad one before they arrive

Airbnb has millions of listings and a star system where nearly all of them score the same. Guests spend hours researching, read every review, and still arrive to find a hot tub that hasn't been filled in weeks. The problem isn't that Airbnb has bad listings. It's that guests can't identify them before check-in.

Improve the Quality of Listings on Airbnb

Comprehend the Situation

Quality here means the gap between what a listing promises and what a guest encounters at check-in, covering photo accuracy, amenity reliability, and the review signals guests use to calibrate trust before booking.

Clarifying questions:

  • How is quality currently measured? AirCover claim rate, CS ticket volume, listing accuracy complaint categories?

  • Is this an acquisition problem (quality gaps prevent bookings) or a retention problem (quality gaps burn guests who already have)?

  • Any constraints on host-side friction, e.g., limits on what Airbnb can require before a listing goes live?
